A Special Thank You from President Paul Sarnese

This last year certainly provided our industry and our profession yet again another opportunity to demonstrate the value and the incredible impact we have on our organizations and the communities we serve. We not only continued to support our organizations during the surge in Covid cases, we secured vital supplies, we supported testing sites, and vaccination clinics. We did all this in the midst of an unprecedented labor shortage. That meant that we all had to do more with less and many times we had to just figure things out on the fly. You epitomize the theme for this year’s Healthcare Security and Safety Week of being Courageous-Resilient- and Professional.

Courageous means not being deterred by danger or pain. This meant showing up for work knowing the risks, enforcing new rules and regulations that not everyone agreed with, putting others needs before our own, doing what is right even when it is difficult, and also having the moral courage to do what is right when no one is looking.

Resilient is defined as able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions, able to recoil and bounce back after bending, stretching or being compressed. You demonstrated resiliency when you began to re-activate to our “pre-Covid” normal operations. You faced all the these challenges with a “can do” and “I will figure it out” attitude.

Professional is defined as a person who is engaged and qualified in a specific profession. You emulate professionalism by the way you compose yourselves and wear your uniforms, by investing in our professional development through education and training and by supporting the goals and mission of your organization.

As this week comes to an end, please continue to celebrate our professionals who make such a critical contribution every day to the facilities and communities we serve. Thank you and stay well.

Sincerely,

Paul Sarnese, CHPA, CAPM, MSE, MAS
IAHSS President
Virtua Health, Assistant Vice President of Safety, Security and Emergency Preparedness
