Industry Benchmarking Program Overview

  • The International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS) has developed the Incident Categories Framework and Glossary of Terms to standardize the collection and classification of security incidents.
  • In addition, IAHSS has implemented a data warehouse to store and disseminate healthcare security Benchmarking Dashboard, establishing industry benchmarks for informed decision-making.
  • The IAHSS goal is to improve statistical benchmarking and comparison of healthcare facilities to drive evidence-based decision-making, supporting safe environments, best practices, and security program growth.
  • How do my incident rates compare to other facilities of similar size and profile?
  • Filter performance metrics for refined comparisons
  • More Efficient Resource Allocation – Benchmarking helps departments determine if they are over- or under-investing in certain areas, ensuring that funds are distributed effectively.
  • How do staff training and IAHSS Certifications impact incident rates?
  • Cost Reduction – By analyzing industry standards, departments can find more cost-effective ways to allocate resources, streamline workflows, and eliminate waste.

What data will be collected:

How is the Dashboard Environment architected:

  • No HIPPA/FIPPA data collected
  • HCFs’ Facility and Department Data is de-identified on the published dashboard
  • Data provider contact data is not published on the dashboard
  • Published Department and Incident Categories use IAHSS standards
  • Data is aggregated or averaged across sites
  • Dashboard employs Privacy Guard to ensure single site data cannot be seen
  • Data and Privacy Protections: Protection of your data is paramount to the IAHSS. All data is stored and safeguarded using industry best practices. The Benchmarking Dashboard’s data model does not contain nor accept Protected Health Information (as defined by HIPAA,PIPEDA, or other applicable privacy laws).
  • Data Submission: You agree to submit Batch Identification, Facility Data and Incident Data, via our secure transfer and mapping tool to be published in the IAHSS Benchmarking Dashboard. Your data will not be sold or shared beyond publication in the dashboard.
  • Program Purpose and Data Usage: By participating, you grant IAHSS a license to deidentify and publish your submitted data in the Benchmarking Dashboard, enabling participating hospitals and researchers to benchmark security practices against similar facilities and to support research on hospital security.
  • Data Anonymity: Incident categories, facility names, department names, and incident report numbers will be deidentified. A Privacy Guard feature will be used to block drilling down to views containing less than five participants’ data.
  • Dashboard Access: You will receive free non-transferable access to the annual Benchmarking Dashboard to view benchmarking results and support internal business processes
  • May need to obtain data from administrative sources (5-20 mins) *
  • Formatting Facility Data (5-20 mins) *

Pulling Incident Data

  • Most Incident Systems like OmniGo allow you to run a report (5-10 mins) *
  • Some like Resolver require additional formatting (15-30 mins)

Mapping Facility Department Names

  • Time dependent upon # of Departments (5-15 mins/building)

Mapping Incident Categories

  • Time dependent upon # of Categories (15-45 mins)

Optional Mappings and Final Submission

  • Time dependent upon optional mappings (5-15 mins)

* Recurring years will require significantly less effort

When will the Incident Dashboard be available

  • We are collecting 2024 Incident Data now through 2025-Q4
  • We will be publishing the 2024 Incident Dashboard in January 2026
  • We will begin collecting 2025 Incident Data in 2026-Q1 and publish in Q2
  • We ask you to provide feedback as you go through the process by emailing dashboard@iahss.org
  • We will continue to evolve the IAHSS Incident Framework and the metrics, benchmarks and assessments offered
  • Help us help you by requesting your incident tracking system provider to incorporate the IAHSS Incident Framework into their solution
