Update to 07.03 Cash and Other Monetary Processing Systems

Friday, February 24, 2023

The International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS) announces the release of an update to industry guideline 07.03 “Cash and Other Monetary Processing Systems” regarding the security of such processes within the healthcare environment. This guideline was originally developed by the IAHSS Council on Guidelines.

Bryan Warren, Council on Guidelines member, is excited about the additional information which has been included in this new update. “Appropriate protective measures regarding cash and other forms of payment have always been a fundamental security concern for any industry, and this includes healthcare facilities. This updated guideline not only speaks to the physical and operational security measures that the processing of monetary transactions requires, but it also includes guidance regarding additional contemporary risks such as data encryption, system authorization protocols and other associated IT security measures including the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS).”

The guideline opens with the statement that “Healthcare Facilities (HCFs) should establish cash, check/cheque and card processing systems designed to reduce the likelihood of loss or fraud; identity theft; and to enhance the safety of staff involved in monetary transactions.”

The IAHSS Council on Guidelines is comprised of volunteer IAHSS members who are seasoned healthcare security professionals and leaders. Each year the Council on Guidelines develops new industry guidelines and reviews existing guidelines on a three-year cycle. All IAHSS guidelines are available electronically to IAHSS members via the IAHSS website. Hardcopies of the guidelines booklet are available for sale in the IAHSS online store.
