Special Message from IAHSS Foundation President, Bonnie Michelman

Thursday, September 16, 2021
Dear IAHSS Member,

I am writing to you to urgently request a few minutes of your time to support a vital IAHSS Foundation research product.

Each year, the Foundation publishes the results of a survey measuring crime rates in the U.S. hospitals. This information is used by security personnel across the country to plan their budgeting, staffing and operations, as well as by media outlets and academic researchers. This year, though, we are at risk of not being able to produce this important document because of insufficient data. We need about 100 more responses by Oct. 8 in order to ensure the validity of the numbers, so I'm asking you, if you haven't already done so, to please complete the survey here(If you have already submitted the data for your facility, thank you! There is no need to do so again.)

Our data collection efforts to this point have been hindered by bad actors almost certainly unconnected to health care systems who have submitted hundreds of fake responses. (For example, one claimed that 348 murdered occurred at a single hospital in 2020.) Since we take our responsibility to you very seriously and pride ourselves on the integrity of our data, we carefully review all submissions in order to weed out the false ones.

So now, we are asking you: Please do not let those who attempted to corrupt the survey be successful. Your data, when combined with other legitimate submissions, will provide key insights into crime and violence trends in hospitals during this unique time. (Please be assured that all individual responses are held confidential and only aggregate data will be reported.)

If you have any questions, please contact Ron Hawkins, the chair of the IAHSS Foundation Research Committee at rhawkins@securityindustry.org

Thank you very much for your support of IAHSS, the Foundation and this project.

Sincerely,

Bonnie Michelman, CHPA, CPP
