2020 Foundation Crime Survey Results

Thursday, September 10, 2020   (0 Comments)

On September 1, 2020, the IAHSS Foundation released the 2020 Healthcare Crime Survey.  The Healthcare Crime Survey is conducted annually to track crime and workplace violence trends at hospitals in the United States.  The 2020 Healthcare Crime Survey found that the Violent Crime Rate at US hospitals remained consistent since 2018 after experiencing a 40% increase over 2015 and 2016 rates.  Assaults and Theft experienced a slight decrease and Disorderly Conduct experienced a larger decrease over 2018 data.

Assaults and Aggravated Assaults against staff by patients and visitors (Workplace Violence Type 2) continued to be a significant concern in US hospitals.  These incidents account for 85% of all Workplace Violence against staff and pose a far greater risk than Workplace Violence committed by domestic partners, co-workers, or third-party criminals.  Type 2 Workplace Violence Assaults occurred at a rate of 1.5 per 100 employees while Type 2 Workplace Violence Aggravated Assaults occurred at a rate of 0.5 per 100 employees.  This data indicates a notable increase over prior year data.
