Chapter Leader Summit - SATURDAY April 22 (pre-qualification required)

Qualified elected Chapter Officers, Regional Chairs and Council Chairs are invited to attend this IAHSS Leadership Summit. Leaders will be updated on exciting new plans within the association and will learn how IAHSS is providing new and improved support to chapters and their leaders. It is an opportunity to network with other Chapter Officers to share best practices and learn from each other. This session will be held on Sunday, May 22nd, from 9:00am – 3:00pm. Chapter Officers, Regional Chairs and Council Chairs should register no later than March 1, 2017 for this summit. 

Healthcare Emergency Management Basics - SUNDAY April 23

Learn the basics of Healthcare Emergency Management, led by instructor Tracy L. Buchman, CHPA, DHA, CHSP, Senior Consultant at HSS, Inc and Assistant Professor at University of Wisconsin- Whitewater. Healthcare security professionals play a significant role in terms of mitigating, preparing, responding, and recovering from the emergencies that threaten the healthcare organization. This session is designed for the healthcare security manager or someone looking to transition into a healthcare security leadership role and covers the basics of healthcare emergency management. It also identifies the similarities to first responder concepts and anomalies found within the healthcare arena. Participants will need to have completed the following FEMA courses prior to attending:

-          IS-100 HC Introduction to the Incident Command System for Healthcare/Hospitals

-          IS-200 HC Applying ICS to Healthcare Organizations

-          IS-700 National Incident Command System (NIMS) an Introduction. 

Guidelines Council Workshop - SUNDAY April 23

Presenter: IAHSS Guidelines Council

This workshop will be led by members of the IAHSS Guidelines Council who will review the processes they follow to develop IAHSS Industry Guidelines.  The attendees will participate in developing new guidelines in small groups facilitated by members of the Council.  All participants will review the work produced by each small group and discuss the next steps the Council will take in finalizing the Guidelines.

Hospitals and Police: Can We Work Together? The Careful Balance between Privacy and Safety

Presenter: R. Kyle Friesen - Counsel, RCMP, Legal Advisory Section, Department of Justice Canada

Kyle Friesen is the legal advisor to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the Province of British Columbia.  Over the past twenty years, Mr. Friesen has led a discussion between hospitals, health care staff and police regarding timely access to patient information for law enforcement investigations.  There is a complex interaction between the privacy of medical care, the confidentiality of patient records, the safety of medical personnel, and the need for timely access by police to sensitive information, which includes medical health and mental health.  Mr. Friesen will review the laws and policies that govern these issues, with real-world situations from British Columbia.  This was the topic of his Master of Arts thesis in 2002, which has taken him from British Columbia to Boston and back, working to manage conflict and ensure lawful access and cooperation on the front lines of medicine and policing.
