The response to the global COVID-19 pandemic is taxing medical facilities large and small. In response, healthcare security programs are being met with requirements to identify essential security services and mitigation strategies to address the shifting demand for security resources. Highly infectious communicable disease outbreaks impact many areas of the security program to include access control, protection of assets and many other processes to provide a reasonably safe environment of care.

In response, the IAHSS Council on Guidelines announced a revision to Healthcare Security Industry Guideline #08.11- Highly Infectious Communicable Disease Response. A draft of the revised Guideline can be viewed here

The revision builds on the importance of relevant and timely information sharing, the responsibility for initiating and providing access and egress control, to include, leveraging technology to augment and preserve security staffing levels. Further guidance is provided on re-defining the role o fsecurity staff in support of  patient care and related activities while temporarily discontinuing other normal duties. This also includes addressing potential future liability associated with performing new tasks and discontinuing others.

The public comment period for this revised Guideline will remain open until May 8, 2020. IAHSS is encouraging members and other key stakeholders to provide suggested alternative feedback or other commentary to info@iahss.org.

When the revised guideline is finalized and approved, it will be available on the IAHSS website.
