Why become certified?

IAHSS has a proven track record in addressing the complex needs of healthcare security and safety professionals. IAHSS certification is the best means to ensure that you and your staff understand and can implement the important functions within your healthcare facility on both a daily basis and when the unexpected occurs.


IAHSS offers the CHPA (Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator) designation for Healthcare Security Managers and Directors.  We offer certification programs for Healthcare Security Officers-- Basic, Advanced and Supervisor.  We also offer a Healthcare Safety Certificate Program.

CHPA Designation

Qualifications: The Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator designation is available to management level healthcare security professionals who meet the qualifying criteria. Once approved, each candidate has twelve months to successfully pass the CHPA certification exam.
Study Materials: The list of study materials is provided once approved.
Exam Details: The CHPA examination is administered at the IAHSS Annual Conference & Exhibition or online with a proctor. All testing must be prearranged.
 Proctor Guidelines: Arrangements must be made with an approved proctor to administer the examination. Proctor Guidelines
Cost: $400 non-refundable application fee - includes the CHPA exam.
Process: Complete the CHPA application outlining the ten required credits accumulated from the four categories of: Education, Experience, Membership and Specialized Training.
Recertification Requirements: A CHPA must renew their certification every three years by earning fifteen credits during the three year credentialing period.
 CHPA-L:  The CHPA lifetime designation (CHPA-L) was granted to individuals who achieved at least six (6) consecutive recertification’s as a CHPA, and who met a number of other specific criteria related to leadership and expertise in the healthcare security and safety industry, as was previously determined by the Commission on Certification. The CHPA-L designation is no longer available and those who hold a CHPA-L do not hold the same rights and responsibilities as a current CHPA, which requires renewal every three years by meeting recertification requirements. Those individuals who earned the CHPA-L designation may continue to use it, although there is no recertification requirement to hold this designation.

The Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) certification is an introductory program in healthcare security and safety.  Some of the topics included in the Basic Training Manual are an introduction to healthcare security, fundamental security skills, the role of security in healthcare organizations, protective measures, healthcare safety and emergency management security.
