IAHSS Launches Two New Certification Examinations and a 6th Edition Basic Training Manual

Glendale Heights, IL – The International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS) is pleased to announce the launch of a newly updated 2016 Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) Certification Examination, a new Basic Certification Examination, and the release of the 6th Edition of the Basic Training Manual for Healthcare Security Officers. The CHPA official release date was April 1, 2016, and the Basic Manual and Exam were made available for purchase through the IAHSS store beginning on June 1, 2016.

The news was initially reported at the Annual General Meeting of the IAHSS membership at the Annual Conference & Exhibition held in Charlotte, North Carolina May 22-25th. Members enthusiastically embraced the announcements and eagerly shared their intentions to use the new study material and to test their officers, managers and directors later this year.

The IAHSS Commission on Certification began the CHPA examination revisions in July 2015. The Commission held both face-to-face and virtual item writing sessions, and those items were subsequently incorporated into the revision of the exam to reflect the newest editions of the study materials, including Tony York and Don MacAlister’s Healthcare and Hospital Security 6th Edition, the 2015 IAHSS Healthcare Security Industry Guidelines, and additional study materials focused on emergency management and safety. A BETA exam was administered to a select group of qualified candidates during January and February this year, and a few tweaks were made to the exam prior to the release of the final version on April 1st.  The CHPA is intended for management level healthcare security professionals, and only applicants with appropriate qualifications of education, experience and training are approved to take the exam.

The IAHSS Council on Education began the process for revising the IAHSS Basic Training Manual in June 2015 by recruiting IAHSS volunteers to revise and update the 5th edition manual.  New and previous authors were encouraged to incorporate the latest research and trends in the field of healthcare security, and for many chapters of the 6th edition, two or more contributing authors participated, which provided new perspectives and enhanced the overall content quality. Members of the Council on Education served as subject matter experts to review the updated content of each chapter, which was later finalized by Russell Jones who served as Editor-in-Chief.

The Commission on Certification revised many items for the Basic Examination and also wrote new items, ensuring that all questions were reflective of the basic knowledge and skills required for a healthcare security officer.

Todd Milne, Chair of the Commission on Certification, reflected back on the significant work completed and stated, “If not for the dedication and commitment of the Commission members and their subject matter expertise, we wouldn’t have achieved so much in so little time. A special thanks to Debbie Hecker, IAHSS Education Manager, for highlighting the roadmap and supporting the successful completion as we now work towards creating a bank of questions to reach the milestone of the CHPA becoming accredited”.
